WHY
OMU?
Attractive Research Environment in Addition to Research Themes

During my undergraduate studies, I majored in environmental engineering, focusing on catalysts for removing particulate matter (PM) from automobile exhaust. My decision to study in Japan was influenced by my advisor, who told me that Japanese universities had a strong track record in exhaust gas research.

I chose Osaka Metropolitan University because I wanted to study in Professor Tamura’s lab. After reading his papers, I was drawn to his research on developing catalytic processes that contribute to resource circulation, particularly solid catalyst processes. Additionally, the merger of two prestigious institutions, Osaka City University and Osaka Prefecture University, created an even stronger educational and research environment in engineering, which further solidified my decision.

Working to Develop Catalysts for CO2 Fixation

Currently, I am working on developing catalysts that efficiently synthesize high-value polycarbonate diols from carbon dioxide and diols. This method allows reactions to proceed using ambient-pressure CO2 as a raw material and is expected to serve as a safer alternative to the conventional phosgene process, which involves hazardous substances. Polycarbonate diols are considered promising materials for chemical CO₂ fixation, and if this catalytic process is successfully developed, it could significantly contribute to building a more sustainable society.

The lab has a full research staff and strong research support and is well-equipped with a wide range of reagents and research instruments, I have felt a noticeable improvement in my research level since coming to Japan. I have also had the opportunity to participate in academic conferences both in Japan and abroad, where I have gained valuable insights from discussions with researchers and improved my ability to present my findings effectively.

A Multinational Research Lab with Active Discussions

When I first arrived in Japan, I was worried about language and cultural differences. However, the lab has an international atmosphere, with several foreign staff and students, and active discussions take place daily. Thanks to this, I was able to adapt quickly. The professors provide detailed guidance, and I always feel comfortable asking questions immediately when I have doubts and feel a sense of closeness. I also received great support from Japanese students in my daily life, which helped me settle in smoothly.

Since many seniors have helped me along the way, I now want to support incoming international students. For those planning to study here, I encourage you not to hesitate to ask for help if you ever face difficulties. The lab members are all very friendly and will be more than willing to support you.
