In recent years, various environmental issues have become more evident due to the effects of global warming. One of the main causes is carbon dioxide, and to prevent further climate change, it is urgent to establish a societal system that circulates carbon resources.
In our lab, we aim to contribute to the recycling of resources such as carbon dioxide, plastics, and biomass through the development of solid catalyst processes.
One of our specific research topics is the synthesis of polycarbonate diol, which is used as a raw material for polyurethane resins. Currently, the phosgene process, which uses phosgene as a carbonyl source, is the conventional method, but phosgene is a toxic reagent and an alternative method is desired to be established. Our lab is working on developing catalysts to synthesize polycarbonate diol from carbon dioxide and diols efficiently and harmlessly, with great expectations for its practical application.
To present research findings to the world, skills such as writing papers in English and presenting at international conferences are essential. Furthermore, interaction between researchers from diverse backgrounds broadens perspectives and can lead to new research ideas. For these reasons, our lab actively accepts international students and researchers.
Research environments differ from one lab or country to another, and language barriers may be a concern for international students. To help alleviate these worries, we employ foreign staff and assign Japanese students to support international students, especially when they first arrive. We also regularly set up meetings and discussions with faculty members to assist with research and resolve any issues related to daily life.
It's difficult to make discoveries if you're conducting research alone. By discussing with staff and lab colleagues, and accumulating many experiments—including failures—research gradually begins to take shape. Once this happens, the research should become even more exciting.
Start by building experimental skills, and gradually progress to designing experiments on your own. Through this process, your logical thinking ability and research skills will also be sharpened.
From research to daily life, we will fully support you, so give your all and take on the challenges you want to pursue.
