OMU?
A Decision to Study Abroad in Search of New Research Opportunities

During my master’s studies at a university in China, I conducted research on organoids using microfluidic devices. Through this work, I became increasingly interested in observing molecular behavior at the single-molecule level rather than studying molecules collectively. This led me to pursue my doctoral studies under Professor Xu, a leading expert in nanofluidic devices.

Osaka Metropolitan University was newly established in 2022 through the merger of Osaka Prefecture University and Osaka City University. As a large, comprehensive university with a broad academic scope, it is rapidly becoming more international, creating an ideal learning environment for international students. This potential for a globally oriented academic atmosphere was another factor that motivated me to enroll.

Although I am still learning Japanese, the university offers extensive support, and my lab mates are incredibly kind, allowing me to conduct my research without any major difficulties.

Nanofluidic Devices Enabling Precise Manipulation of Individual Molecules

My current research focuses on developing Single-Molecule Regulated Chemistry (SMRC), a concept proposed by Professor Xu, using nanofluidic devices. If we can precisely and efficiently control individual molecules with minimal energy, we may be able to create new materials with diverse functionalities in the future.

Since my background was in biology up to the master’s level, I had a lot to learn about chemical engineering. However, thanks to the guidance of my professor and lab members, I have been able to make steady progress in my research. Graduate students often have demanding schedules, but my professor helped me create a well-balanced research plan, allowing me to secure time for breaks. As a result, I can still enjoy hobbies such as basketball and traveling on weekends.

State-of-the-Art Research Facilities and an International Environment

One of Osaka Metropolitan University's greatest strengths is its advanced research infrastructure, including a Class 10 clean room. Professor Xu’s lab is also equipped with multiple optical detection platforms and laser microscopes for single-molecule manipulation and analysis, providing the opportunity to conduct experiments without restrictions.

The university’s international environment has exceeded my expectations. There are many international students on campus, and programs are available for engaging in discussions with overseas researchers online, and we are stimulated by people from various countries.

After completing my Ph.D., I plan to continue building my research career in Japan. However, my long-term goal is to establish my research team in China. I hope to leverage the connections I have developed at Osaka Metropolitan University to collaborate with researchers from around the world.
