これからのイベント ● Dr. Cristian Mariani's Lectures on Philosophy of Contemporary Physics Dates: March 26th Venue: Multipurpose Seminar Room 1169, 11th floor, Morinomiya Campus, OMU Lecture 1: Temporal Non-Locality (14:00-15:30) This paper investigates the philosophical consequences of temporal non-locality in quantum mechanics, focusing on non-Markovian spontaneous collapse models. Standard collapse models assume Markovian dynamics, in which the future state of a system depends only on its present state. When the white-noise driving collapse is replaced by colored noise, however, temporal correlations and memory effects are introduced: past states can directly influence future evolution in ways that cannot be screened off by the present. I analyze two major philosophical consequences of this shift. First, the rejection of Markovianity puts pressure on presentism and related views in the philosophy of time, since the causal efficacy of past states requires either extending what counts as ontologically present or explaining how non-existent times can bear causal influence. Second, the physical character of colored noise supports a "noise-field realism," suggesting the stochastic element of collapse is not a mere mathematical device but a genuine physical field. Non-Markovian collapse models thus serve as a test case for evaluating the costs of temporal non-locality and its implications for our fundamental picture of time. Lecture 2: Metaphysical Indeterminacy in Quantum Physics (15:45-17:15) This paper defends the view that quantum mechanics provides evidence for genuine, worldly metaphysical indeterminacy. I argue that quantum systems can instantiate determinable properties—such as spin or position—without instantiating any unique determinate value, and that this indeterminacy is best understood as an objective, non-epistemic feature of physical reality rather than a reflection of our ignorance or a semantic artifact. Surveying the main theoretical frameworks for characterizing metaphysical indeterminacy, including metaphysical supervaluationism and the determinable-based account, I evaluate their respective resources for accommodating quantum phenomena across different interpretations of quantum mechanics. I further argue that quantum entanglement, typically regarded as a fundamental physical relation, is better understood as derivative on indeterminacy: when two systems instantiate indeterminate properties, entanglement emerges as the coordination of their indeterminacy profiles.
