Research Press Release by Mika Takeuchi (2nd-year Master's Student, Grad. Sch. of Sci., OMU) and Prof. Yutaka Amao et al. Regarding the Doubled Synthesis Efficiency of Fumaric Acid from Gaseous CO2
Successful Production of Fumaric Acid as a Plastic Raw Material with Doubled Synthesis Efficiency Directly Using Gaseous Carbon Dioxide
Key Points of This Research
- Developed a new dye, doubling the yield of fumaric acid production.
- A new artificial photosynthesis method that directly utilizes gaseous carbon dioxide!
Summary
Professor Yutaka Amao (Director of the Research Center for Artificial Photosynthesis, Osaka Metropolitan University) and Mika Takeuchi (Graduate Student, Graduate School of Science, Osaka Metropolitan University) have successfully synthesized fumaric acid—a raw material for plastics—with a yield twice that of conventional methods by developing a new dye utilizing gaseous carbon dioxide and solar energy. This represents a valuable step toward aiming for synthesis through further yield improvements using renewable energy as a raw material.
These research results were published online on November 27, 2023, in Dalton Transactions, an academic journal of the Royal Society of Chemistry. Additionally, this paper was selected for the outside front cover of Volume 2024, Issue 2 of the journal. The cover design images the process of producing fumaric acid from gaseous carbon dioxide using solar energy.
