Professor Yutaka Amao (Director, Research Center for Artificial Photosynthesis)'s original illustration has been selected to adorn the cover of the recently released "New Journal of Chemistry".

[Title of the paper]
Enhancement of catalytic activity for selective hydrogen production from formate with homogeneously poly(vinylpyrrolidone)/cationic poly(l-lysine) dispersed platinum nanoparticles
[Authors]
Graduate Student Yusuke Minami, a second-year Master's Program in the Department of Materials and Molecular Science at the Graduate School of Science, Special researcher Yumiko Muroga (Research Center for Artificial Photosynthesis), Professor Yutaka Amao (Research Center for Artificial Photosynthesis)
[Contents of the paper]
We discovered that hydrogen generation efficiency was improved by using a catalyst in which platinum particles were dispersed between polovinylpyrrolidone and the biopolymer polylysine, which promotes the reaction of decomposing formic acid to produce hydrogen.

Comment from Director Amao
This illustration visualizes a platinum nanoparticle encased in polyvinylpyrrolidone (armor) surrounded by polylysine molecules that attract numerous formic acid molecules. Inside the armor, the formic acid is cleaved by "scissors" to generate hydrogen atoms (depicted as white spheres).
