Overview

Physics is the most fundamental scientific discipline that studies the behavior of matter and everything, and underlying universal laws, through the collaboration of experimental observations and theoretical reflection. Advances in physical science enrich our understanding and perception of the nature, and our life as well.  Developing human resources with profound scholarship in physics and logical methods is becoming more important in modern society that pursues basic research and state-of-the-art technology. OMU Physics offers training and research program in theoretical physics, experimental physics, and also in science communication, to foster individuals who are rich in creativity, who can identify and solve challenging problems by their own, and who can widely contribute to society. 

OMU Physics consists of 47 faculty members who conduct their own forefront research groups or labs that pursue excellence in a variety of fields of physics, like theoretical and experimental particle physics, nuclear physics, astrophysics, and condensed matter physics.  Undergraduate students are given plenty of opportunity to study from the outstanding faculty through classroom lectures, discussion, and undergraduate research programs.

Diploma Policies

Bachelor of Science

The OMU Physics diploma policy is as follows: The degree of Bachelor of Science is given to a graduate who

      1. Has acquired a solid understanding of the natural sciences, mathematics, informatics, the social sciences,  liberal arts, and foreign language skills, to think globally and to make independent and comprehensive decisions as a member of modern society.
      2. Has acquired methods of both theoretical and experimental physics, to analyze and understand various phenomena in the nature.
      3. Can apply advanced knowledge in physics and its methodology to a broad range of fields, and conduct further developments.
      4. Can identify, analyze, and solve challenging research problems on his or her own with original ideas.
      5. Can describe and express scientific concepts in a logical and appropriate manner to convey one's findings, and communicate and share ideas with others at various domestic and international scenes.
      6. Understands impact and influence of science and technology upon nature and society, and demonstrates integrity and social responsibilities as an independent scientist.

Master of Science

The graduate school of OMU Physics offers 2-year course for advanced studies, and the Degree of Master of Science will be given to a graduate who

          1. Has acquired broad knowledge of physics, a deep understanding of the specialized field, and the ability to analyze and understand the behavior of matter and the nature of various phenomena.
          2. Has acquired ability to conduct research of high academic quality that contributes to further development of the relevant field, and to complete a dissertation of a high academic standard.
          3. Can explain the research in a systematic and appropriate manner
          4. Can communicate with others in a foreign language at international scenes
          5. Has acquired in-depth knowledge in natural and social sciences, ethics, as well as the ability to judge things from a global perspective, and an understanding of the impact and influence of science and technology on society and social responsibilities that a scientist must fulfill.

Doctor of Science

The graduate school of OMU Physics offers further 3-year course for advanced studies and research for post-master students, and the Degree of Doctor of Science will be given to a graduate who

          1. Has acquired broad and advanced knowledge of physics, a solid understanding of the specialized field, and the ability to analyze and understand the behavior of matter and the nature of various phenomena.
          2. Has acquired ability to conduct research of internationally-accepted academic quality that contributes to further development of the relevant field, and to complete a dissertation of a high academic standard.
          3. Has the ability to plan, conduct, and evaluate creative and original research of a high academic standard.
          4. Has an academic excellence, in-depth understanding of the research field, and foreign language skills to conduct original research.
