(Space Debris Removal by Laser Ablation)

(Background of Research)

(Fig.1).

Since the launch of the first artificial satellite "Sputnik 1" in 1957, development in space brisks up. However, the amount of space debris, which consists of wreckage of rockets and abandoned satellites, has been increasing, thus space debris have become a serious issue in space development.

In recent years, various technologies have been studied to remove space debris. In particular for space debris smaller than 10 cm in diameter, "Space Debris Removal by Laser Ablation" is promising. "Laser Ablation" is a penomenon where the surface materials become plasma and erupt when an object's surface is irradiated with a high-intensity laser beam.

In this technology, the following procedure will be taken to remove space debris  (Fig. 1).

        1. A telescope mounted on a space debris removal satellite detects and tracks space debris of 10-cm class.
        2. A laser irradiates the space debris.
        3. Laser ablation occurs and thrust is generated.
        4. The generated thrust reduces the speed of the space the space debris.
        5. The decrease in velocity makes the space debris transition to dropping orbit.

(Purpose of the Research)

The purpose of the research in Mori laboratory is to investigate the physics of Laser ablation thrust shown in Fig.1, by measuring the laser ablation thrust experimentally. It is important to estimate the thrust generated by laser ablation, and we are measuring the thrust generated by laser ablation under various laser irradiation conditions (laser type, laser intensity, laser irradiation time, space debris rotation, etc...).

(Research)

In Mori laboratory, measurement of laser ablation thrust is mainly conducted by a unique approach using "Electrostatic Levitation Furnace (ELF)". In the experiments, ELF at Ishikawa Laboratory, ISAS,JAXA and ELF at Mori Laboratory are used. ELF can reproduce the thermally and mechanically isolated environment of space debris by levitating a metal sample that resembles space debris.

Estimation of laser ablation thrust by numerical simulation is also conducted.

-Measurement of laser ablation thrust using low-power CW laser and levitated high-temperature samples

Measurement of laser ablation thrust using low-power CW laser and levitated high-temperature samples are conducted by using ELF(Ishikawa Laboratory, ISAS,JAXA). In a previous study on laser ablation thrust4, the thrust was measured using high intensity pulsed laser and samples at room temperature, which was large enough for the laser diameter. However, there are few studies using low-power lasers. Furthermore, it is important to measure laser ablation thrust of samples in a high-temperature state because the sample becomes hotter overall when irradiated with a laser for a long period of time.

-Measurement of laser ablation thrust using the ISS onboard electrostatic levitation furnace

Using the electrostatic levitation furnace aboard the International Space Station (ISS) "Kibo", measurement of the laser ablation thrust will be conducted under microgravity conditions.

Experiments in orbit under microgravity makes it possible to measure the laser ablation thrust on a high-temperature aluminum sphere, which is difficult to levitate stably on the ground. It is expected to clarify the physics of thrust generation in aluminum space debris.

This research is introduced in the following website of JAXA Human Spaceflight Technology Directorate.

-Measurement of laser ablation thrust using pulsed lasers and levitated samples

-Estimation of laser ablation thrust by numerical simulation
