Successful Synthesis of Fumaric Acid, a Raw Material for Biodegradable Plastics, from Carbon Dioxide

Key Points of This Research

  • Breakthrough Proposal for Effective Utilization of Carbon Dioxide and Petroleum-Free Society!
  • New Artificial Photosynthesis Method Synthesizing Biodegradable Plastic Raw Materials Using Sunlight!

Summary

Professor Yutaka Amao (Director and Professor, Research Center for Artificial Photosynthesis, Osaka Metropolitan University) and Mika Takeuchi (Graduate Student, Graduate School of Science, Osaka Metropolitan University) have successfully synthesized fumaric acid, a raw material for plastics, from carbon dioxide using solar energy for the first time.

Fumaric acid is traditionally synthesized from petroleum as a raw material for polybutylene succinate, a biodegradable plastic. However, this research achievement enables its synthesis using renewable energy from carbon dioxide and biomass-derived compounds.

These research results were published online on December 13, 2022, in Sustainable Energy and Fuels, an academic journal of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

We have been continuing our research toward the practical application of artificial photosynthesis. Last time, we utilized biocatalysts, and this time, we challenged and succeeded in using visible light—a renewable energy source—as the driving force. I am delighted that we could take another step forward in research that contributes to the utilization of clean energy. Moving forward, based on the results obtained, I would like to work on improving the efficiency of the reaction process.
