School of Science

Science (natural science) is a discipline that pursues, universalizes, and systematizes the truths that lie deep within nature. Science has supported the development of humankind for thousands of years since time immemorial. And it is on the basis of this science that modern science and technology have been built. Apart from this long-term perspective, modern science and technology are developing rapidly. The emergence of the Internet, artificial intelligence, biotechnology, etc., is drastically changing our lives and social structure. There is a mountain of issues that must be tackled with the collective wisdom of mankind, such as the prediction and prevention of natural disasters, massive earthquakes and typhoons, the prevention of global warming, and the conservation of biodiversity. We must not forget that science is at the root of these issues. Without science, there can be no progress in science and technology, and no sustainable and healthy development of civilized society.
Two elements are required of the science faculty of the new era. The first is to pass on to the next generation the natural sciences that have sustained humanity over the long term and universally, by exploring the truth and opening up the frontiers of human knowledge. This is the core of the Faculty of Science and the Graduate School of Science, and this part of our mission is not affected by short-term changes in social conditions. The second is to develop the results obtained through the search for truth and disseminate them to society. This includes responding to the rapid changes in science and technology, and disseminating and returning the results to society. Our department aims to achieve both of these goals.

The Faculty will form a significant center of comprehensive science education in Osaka Metropolitan University, with six departments: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geosciences, and Biological Chemistry. In addition, the School of Science will play a central role in the education and research of science at Osaka Metropolitan University, which aims to become the largest public university in Japan and a research university. It is also our responsibility to contribute to the development of Osaka by producing world-leading research results and opening up the frontiers of human knowledge, and by returning those research activities to undergraduate education and fostering and producing outstanding human resources who will lead Japan in the next generation.
