In the summer of 2023, I studied abroad at Thomas Jefferson University. This program was held for the first time in 4 years due to the COVID-19 situation. The experience in this program was a turning point in my life.

During this program, in addition to several departments such as internal medicine and emergency department, I visited a basic research laboratory on my strong request. It was all very stimulating and meaningful, so I would like to write about a few things that particularly impressed me.

First of all, the scale of each department is so large, and there are several buildings, all of which are hospitals. And I was also surprised to see medical doctors/students walking there wearing scrubs, and I imitated them by wearing scrubs to school.

And I was very surprised by the presence of Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners in the hospital. They were highly trained medical professionals who provided direct care to patients. That seems to be a rare system in Japan.

The medical students appeared to be extremely diligent and highly motivated. They came to school early in the morning and studied hard even on their days off. Moreover, they also actively provided care to patients in the jeffHOPE program, in which students take the initiative to provide free medical care to homeless and poor people.

I also had the opportunity to visit the Laboratory of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology. It is so large and has done a lot of pioneering work. I want to be a basic medical researcher, so this was an exciting time for me.

The most memorable phrase was "Don't be afraid of failure." Through this program, I felt it was necessary to be proactive when trying to learn English and Medicine without being afraid of failure.

Finally, I would like to express my gratitude to all the people who have been involved in this program.
Thank you.
