Department of Applied Biological Chemistry

About Department of Applied Biological Chemistry

Department of Applied Biological Chemistry provides education and research intending to understand the biological phenomena of various living organisms at the molecular and cellular levels and apply the knowledge to the sustainable development of human society. We aim to develop graduates with an international and interdisciplinary perspective, who can contribute to the development of academia and industry related to bioscience and biotechnology. Graduates will acquire the ability to take on the challenge of solving the social issues confronting humanity related to resources, the environment, food, health, and life.

Master’s Course

In the Master’s course, students acquire specialized knowledge and improve research and presentation skills in applied biological chemistry. Students have the opportunity to become highly skilled professionals and researchers with an international perspective. The main career paths for graduates of this department are technical and research positions in fields related to biotechnology and bioscience and in companies and government agencies related to the production of food, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals and their infrastructure or advancement to doctoral programs.

Doctoral Course

In the Doctoral course, students acquire advanced knowledge and skills in applied biological chemistry. Students also acquire the ability to plan and carry out research independently. The main career paths for graduates of this department are faculty positions at universities, private and public research institutions in fields related to biotechnology and bioscience, and companies and government agencies related to the production of food, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals and their infrastructure or advancement to doctoral programs.

Curriculum

Master’s Course

We offer subjects that include a few compulsory courses such as research justice courses and elective courses in which professors from nine laboratories explain the latest developments in their research fields. Elective subjects include topics in cell biology, food chemistry, chemical biology, organic chemistry, and microbiology; special lectures (intensive courses) are also offered for students to acquire advanced expertise in bioscience. Students will spend much of their time conducting research on specific research topics under the supervision of a faculty. Thus, students can develop the ability to independently construct and appropriately conduct research, appropriately analyze the experimental results, and draw original and novel conclusions. This program fosters advanced professionals and researchers with a global perspective and the ability to work in a wide range of fields related to advanced and diversified bioscience and biotechnology.

Doctoral Course

We offer a few subjects including research justice subjects. We also offer research guidance subjects, in which students can devote much of their time to conduct research. Through the courses, students will develop the creativity, logical thinking, and problem solving skills necessary for researchers, as well as the ethics and sense of responsibility of a scientist. Graduates will gain confidence as independent researchers who are active on a global scale.
