Class cancellation policy

Cancellation of classes and postponement of scheduled examinations due to severe weather conditions, suspension of public transportation services, and others

1. Cancellation of classes due to severe weather conditions

When a storm warning, snow storm warning, or various other emergency warnings have been issued for the area including the campus location, all classes (including scheduled examinations) at the affected campus will be canceled as a general rule. However, classes will be held in whole or in part depending on the time the warning is lifted as shown in the tables below on this page: Table [A], [B], and [C].

As a general rule, if a storm warning, snow storm warning, or various other emergency warnings are issued for the area including the campus location when classes or examinations are in session, those already in progress will continue as scheduled, and other classes will be canceled from the next period.

In addition, off-campus practical training classes, etc., may be canceled at the discretion of the instructor in charge, based on the above-mentioned matters. (Practical training will not be conducted when a storm warning, snow storm warning, or various other emergency warnings have been issued for the area where it is scheduled to take place.) Please note that the cancellation of classes due to severe weather conditions applies only to face-to-face classes, not to remote classes.

2. Cancellation of classes due to suspension of public transportation services

Classes (including scheduled examinations) will be canceled in principle when any of the following transportation services are suspended (except for temporary suspension due to accidents, etc.). However, classes will be held in whole or in part depending on the time services resume as shown in the tables below on this page: Table [A], [B], and [C].

Additionally, in case of planned or forecasted transportation service suspension, classes may be canceled in advance depending on the content of the announcement, such as the routes affected and the duration of the service suspension.

Note that the cancellation of classes due to suspension of public transportation is only applicable to face-to-face classes, and not to remote classes.

3. Cancellation of classes due to an earthquake

In the event of an earthquake with a seismic intensity of 5-upper or higher in an area encompassing the campus location, classes will be canceled for that day. The university will decide whether or not to cancel classes for the days that follow taking into consideration the disaster situation and other factors. If an earthquake occurs anywhere in Osaka Prefecture but not at the campus location, or if the seismic intensity of the earthquake is less than 5-upper, the university will respond according to the operation of public transportation services.

Additionally, in the event of a natural disaster caused by an earthquake, the university may cancel classes or take other measures depending on the situation.

*Note: Please refer to 6 for measures to be taken when external factors make it difficult to commute to and from the university. Even if classes are not canceled in accordance with 1 through 3 above, please prioritize personal safety.

4. Cancellation of remote classes when the remote class support system (Moodle) is inoperable (limited to simultaneous interactive classes)

When Moodle is inoperable, simultaneous interactive classes will be canceled as a general rule (except when the instructor contacts the students directly). However, depending on the time Moodle is restored as shown in the tables below on this page, all or part of the classes will be held. Remote classes (On-demand type) will not be canceled.

5. Other cases

  • For online classes that are relayed simultaneously with face-to-face classes (HyFlex-type), if the class on campus is canceled, the online class will be canceled as well.
In addition to the above reasons, in the event of a natural disaster for which evacuation information is announced or for which a J-Alert (Japan Alert System) is issued for the location of the campus or other facilities, classes will be canceled for the safety of students.

  • In addition to the reasons listed above, classes may be canceled by the Manager of the Academic Affairs Division depending on the situation. In the case of such, an exceptional decision will be made for the classes to be held after 9:00 a.m. Notifications will be sent via the Student Portal (UNIPA).

6. Special measures for students who are unable to commute to and from campus.

Even if the aforementioned measures do not result in the cancellation of classes, students who are unable to attend classes due to any of the following events in the area where they live or on their route to the university (including cases where students have difficulty commuting from campus), they should submit a notice of absence to the instructor in charge of the class and request that the absence be considered at a later date.
