July 29, 2026
Hiroyuki Sakuragi
President, Osaka Metropolitan University
We would like to express our deepest condolences to those who lost their lives in the devastating earthquake that struck the Kumamoto region on July 28, 2026, and our deepest sympathies to all those who have been affected by the disaster.
We would also like to express our sincere appreciation to all those who are working tirelessly on rescue operations and to support the victims, wishing for the safety of everyone in the affected areas and for their lives to return to normal as soon as possible.
OMU students, faculty, and staff members:
We ask all OMU students, faculty, and staff in the affected areas to prioritize their safety first and foremost. If you are planning to travel to Kyushu for research activities, extracurricular activities, volunteer work, or to visit your family and relatives, please stay informed through official announcements and reliable news sources. We encourage you to carefully assess the situation, including making changes to your plans if necessary.
For students,
If you are unable to take examinations or if the earthquake has affected your classes, research activities, or other academic activities, please contact the academic affairs office of your school as soon as possible. After confirming your situation, the university will provide individual support, including arrangements for make-up examinations where appropriate. If you have any concerns or difficulties, please do not hesitate to contact the university for support.
For faculty members,
If classes must be canceled or examinations postponed due to the impact of an earthquake or other unavoidable circumstances, please inform your department’s Academic Affairs Office. Guidance has been provided to students who are unable to attend classes, including how to submit absence notifications. If you receive such notifications, we kindly ask for your cooperation in handling them appropriately.
