OMU students showcase aerospace ideas at Boeing University Externship Summer Seminar
Osaka Metropolitan University hosted the Boeing University Externship Summer Seminar on September 7, 2026, at the Iida Group Expo Commemorative Auditorium on Morinomiya Campus. Coordinated by Professor Daisuke Sasaki and Associate Professor Adriana Andreeva-Mori of the Graduate School of Engineering, the event brought together more than 80 students from 11 universities across Japan, who explored ideas that could help shape the future of the aerospace industry.
Representing OMU, fourth-year students Tomoki Ueno, Rihito Shibata, and Rurika Yoshida from the Department of Aerospace Engineering, School of Engineering, proposed a fair compensation system to address the impact of rocket launches on airlines. The team developed a market-based framework of compensation for airlines whenever rocket launches resulted in flight delays, detours, or airspace closures.

For the students, the competition provided an opportunity to step outside their usual environment and present in front of a large audience. For Rurika, the competition was a chance for the group to enjoy their shared interest in aerospace. “We are all interested in airlines and space,” she said. “But for me personally, it’s definitely rockets. This experience convinced me that space issues are something I want to work with in the future.”
Boeing representatives praised the students for their unique topic and smooth delivery. The judges highlighted the energy the team brought to the competition and their potential to contribute to the future of the aerospace industry. For the students, the seminar provided a valuable opportunity to connect their interests, refine their ideas, and deepen their engagement with the aerospace field.

Prior to the seminar, Vice President Masahide Takahashi welcomed Boeing Japan President Eric John and other representatives to the SMBC Sky Lounge on the 12th floor of Morinomiya Campus for a reception.
The aerospace industry is becoming increasingly important in the University’s educational and research activities, and this seminar served as a meaningful opportunity to foster the next generation of talent in this field and to further deepen industry-academia collaboration.
OMU will continue to work toward the advancement of education and research, as well as the creation of innovations that contribute to solving societal challenges, through collaboration with companies and research institutions.
