Healthcare Innovation Lab opening ceremony held by OMU and Vietnamese Vinmec

On July 4, 2022, OMU and the Vinmec Healthcare System of Vietnam held an opening ceremony for the Vinmec Healthcare Innovation Lab at the OMU Abeno campus. The event was facilitated through a newly developed research and education project led by Project Assistant Professor Le Thi Thanh Thuy from the OMU Graduate School of Medicine.

In attendance from the Vinmec Healthcare System (Vinmec) and VinUniversity (VinUni) were Professor Tran Trung Dung, Director of the Vinmec Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine Center and Chairman of the Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine Department, the VinUni College of Health Science, and the Vinmec medical doctors who will be research students at the OMU Graduate School of Medicine, including Nguyen Tran Quang Sang, MD, Head of the Vinmec Musculoskeletal Tumor Department; Tran Duc Thanh, MD and Dang Minh Quang, MD from the Vinmec Musculoskeletal Tumor Department; and Nguyen Van Khanh, MD from the Vinmec Pathology Department.

OMU was represented by Professor Norifumi Kawada, Dean of the School and Graduate School of Medicine and Chairman of the Department of Hepatology, the Graduate School of Medicine, and other professors from the Graduate School of Medicine, including Professor Hiroaki Nakamura from the Department of Orthopedic Surgery; Professor Motomu Hashimoto from the Department of Clinical Immunology; Professor Takahiro Nonaka from the Department of Health and Medical Innovation; Associate Professor Hidetomi Terai from the Department of Orthopedic Surgery; Project Assistant Professor Le Thi Thanh Thuy from the Department of Hepatology; and Dr. Hoang Hai, a senior researcher from the Department of Hepatology. Also joining the event was graduate student Masayoshi Iwamae, MD from the Department of Orthopedic Surgery.

Speaking at the opening, Professor Kawada offered his congratulations on the new research and education project between Vinmec, VinUni, and OMU, and stated that the Vinmec Healthcare Innovation Lab would be a bridge to connect clinical and basic research, contributing to better healthcare. Assistant Professor Le expressed her hope that the new project would shed light on bone cancer issues in Vietnam and support healthcare services for Vietnamese patients. Professor Tran expressed his gratitude for OMU’s support before delivering his presentation, entitled “Vinmec Hospital and VinUni – Development Steps and Vision,” during which he introduced Vinmec as one of the largest hospital systems in Vietnam and outlined several steps for its further expansion. The meeting then proceeded with an active Q&A section when the participants discussed capacity building and treatment technologies at Vinmec as well as potential student exchange programs between Vinmec and OMU. Concluding the meeting, the participants reaffirmed the ongoing partnership between OMU, Vinmec, and VinUni.

After the ceremony, the participants toured the OMU Graduate School of Medicine and visited the newly established Vinmec Healthcare Innovation Lab.
