DFKI Professor Andreas Dengel Delivers Special Lecture on AI and Biotechnology
Professor Andreas Dengel from the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) delivered a special lecture at the Nakamozu and Abeno Campuses on May 19 and 20, 2025.
As part of the ASPIRE project, the lecture "AI for Biotechnologies: A New Approach Using Large Language Models and Knowledge Graphs," examined how artificial intelligence (AI) enhances the understanding of biological relationships and uncovers hidden patterns in large datasets. Professor Dengel introduced AI-driven methodologies that can drive innovation in drug discovery and biotechnology, particularly by improving cost efficiency and accelerating pharmaceutical research.
Over the two days, medical researchers and students attended the lecture, engaging in discussions on how cutting-edge AI technology is driving advancements in biotechnology and drug development. President Hiroyuki Sakuragi was even in attendance to gain insights on this growing field.
On the evening of May 20, Professor Dengel, along with Graduate School of Informatics Professors Koichi Kise and Shoya Ishimaru, participated in a panel discussion at the Osaka-Kansai Expo German Pavilion. The discussion, “Long-term Collaboration between Germany and Japan in the Field of AI: A Case of the German Research Center for AI (DFKI) and Its Laboratory in Japan,” explored strategic perspectives on AI and the future of innovation networks between Germany and Japan.
These events established a strong foundation for the continued collaboration between Germany and Japan in AI research. Moving forward, OMU and DFKI remain committed to advancing AI applications in the medical field and driving pioneering developments that enhance healthcare and scientific discovery.
