Forget what you know about Kabuki: Iida Group & OMU holds fusion performance at Osaka Expo
Iida Group & OMU held a special version of “Japan Theater “Seimei”” in the Shining Hat Hall at Osaka Expo on August 2, 2025, as part of the Iida Group Pavilion Day’s “Fusion of Tradition and Evolution” theme.
In a rare display of modern Kabuki, the packed performance featured renowned actors, Danjuro Ichikawa XIII and Toa Shimazaki, and a guitar accompaniment by Japanese guitarist SUGIZO. In front of a full house, the play opened to a renewed spin on the story of the imperial court spiritualist, Onmyoji Abe no Seimei, and the four cardinal gods, Suzaku, Seiryu, Genbu, and Byakko. Actors used the Shining Hat’s auditorium space to their full discretion, captivating the audience as they raced down the aisles between their seats.
The performance came to a close with a celebratory Kagura dance choreographed by Kento Mori, which featured OMU students who encouraged collaborative participation from the audience. During curtain call, OMU Chairperson, Shinichi Fukushima, joined the performers and other officials for a formal closing.
