Swiss JSPS Postdoctoral Fellow reports research activities on campus

On 30 May 2023, Mr. Maurice Yip from the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, reported on his research activities as a JSPS International Research Fellow, hosted by Professor Takashi Yamazaki in the Department of Geography, the Graduate School of Literature and Human Sciences, since January.

The theme of the colloquium was “Language Translation of Geographical Knowledge: A Lens into the History of Human Geography in Japan.” Mr. Yip presented several examples of how translation has contributed to the development of geography in contemporary Japan. The lecture was given in English, with Professor Yamazaki acting as the interpreter. It was attended by more than a dozen undergraduate and graduate students from the Department of Geography.

The lecture summarized Mr. Yip's research on mutual understanding between people from different countries and regions and the origins of Japanese geography from the perspective of language and translation. A lively question and answer session concluded the colloquium.
