Diversity Promotion

The OMU Declaration on Diversity and Inclusion is based on the same perspective as the Osaka Metropolitan University Charter. Given the demand to respect diversity, especially in the arena of intellectual creation, OMU declares that we will keep the traditions of our two predecessor universities, and in response to the trust and expectations of society, we will overcome discrimination and prejudice with our intellectual curiosity and flexible thinking, we will convey the principles of diversity to the next generation who will be responsible for creating a sustainable society where each individual is valued and everyone can participate, and we will contribute to the realization of an inclusive society.

OMU Declaration on Diversity and Inclusion

Human beings have adapted to the Earth's environment by living in harmony with each other and have been able to continue to exist to this day. Even when faced with something beyond our own experience, we have the ability to use our imagination, put ourselves in the shoes of others, and think about how one should act. In other words, mutual recognition of diverse existence means confirming that each person is valued by others just as much as oneself, developing ways to help each other, and increasing the number of new options. Thus, respect for diversity is truly the wisdom of those living in an inclusive society.

Universities, where a wide range of people cooperate in intellectually creative activities, are expected to develop new discoveries and insights from a position of respect for diversity, and to communicate their work broadly to society. Aware of the importance of that role, our predecessors put great importance on realizing a university that respects human rights and fundamental freedoms, as well as becoming a center of trust based on the three principles of diversity, inclusion, and globalization.

Based on the example of our predecessors, we believe it is our duty to contribute to the realization of an inclusive society in Osaka, a city with a long history of fostering a free and vigorous culture, by overcoming discrimination and prejudice with intellectual curiosity and flexible thinking, and by conveying the principles of diversity to the next generation who will be responsible for creating a sustainable society where each individual is valued and everyone can participate. We, Osaka Metropolitan University, declare the following:

1   OMU will respect human rights and eliminate discrimination.

In light of the importance of human rights, OMU will: create an education, research, and work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment; establish support systems to prevent anyone from being unfairly excluded; and create campuses where everyone can freely study and work with enthusiasm.

2   OMU will be sensitive to diversity and help each person fulfill their potential.

OMU will respect the individuality of each person, find value in the symbiosis between diverse people, and create campuses where each person can fulfill their potential, where interaction is encouraged to deepen mutual understanding, and where equitable relationships can be established.

3  OMU will create an intellectually open academic community and disseminate its results to society.

OMU will continue to earn the trust of the local community and expand its activities to the international community, constantly seeking new discoveries, listening to diverse voices, and disseminating to society the results refined in response to criticism.
